2025 Sister Annie Henry Scholarship

Available to an Undergraduate Māori student who is a direct descendant of Reverend John George Laughton or of Tūhoe descent, to assist with education or training costs.

The Sister Annie Henry scholarship was established around 1972 after the Māori Education Foundation (now Trust) received a bequest from the estate of the late Sister Annie Henry who passed in 1971 at age 92. It was outlined that the scholarships be limited to those who are descendants of Reverend John George Laughton and are of Tūhoe descent. It was initially set up as a secondary school scholarship only, but after inquiries from Laughton’s whanau, it was then opened up to both secondary and tertiary students. 

 

The 2025 Sister Annie Henry Scholarship aims to support specifically those who are direct descendants of Reverend John George Laughton or, who whakapapa to Tūhoe, with costs associated with their area of study and training.

EligibilityApplicants must:

  1. be of New Zealand Māori descent;
  2. be enrolled at a tertiary institute in 2025;
  3. be attending full-time study for the full year;
  4. be a direct descendant of Reverend John George Laughton or of Tūhoe descent;
  5. submit the application and supporting documentation on time.

Supporting Information You need to provide:

  1. Whakapapa verification. This can be a letter from your iwi confirming your registration to Tūhoe iwi, or confirming your whakapapa to Reverend John George Laughton.
  2. 2025 Enrolment confirmation. This will need to prove that you're undertaking full-time study for the full year.
  3. NSN and student ID number.
  4. Bank verification of your bank account number. This can be a bank statement or a screenshot of your banking app.
  5. Academic transcript. This does not need to be certified.
  6. Curriculum Vitae.
