2022 Postgraduate Scholarships

The 2022 Postgraduate Scholarship round has closed.  We are now working through the applications received and will be in touch with successful applicants in the coming weeks.

The postgraduate scholarship round closes 4.30 pm, Thursday, 31 Poutū-te-rangi (March) 2022. Note:   If you already hold an undergraduate degree and are intending to undertake study for an additional undergraduate degree, you must submit a postgraduate scholarship application.  If you have any queries, do not hesitate to contact us.

Edward Holmes Tertiary Scholarship

Number of recipients: varies

Value of scholarship: varies

Available to tertiary students who are a registered beneficiary of the Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nui ā Rua Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE).

Eric Hall McCormick Scholarship

Number of recipients: 4

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to a Māori student undertaking research at postgraduate level in a field which is of significant benefit to Māori. Preference will be given to Māori students attending the University of Auckland.

Māori Education Trust Postgraduate Scholarship


Number of recipients: 6

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to Māori postgraduate students undertaking postgraduate study.  Priority will be given to students with financial need.

Māori Education Trust Postgraduate Scholarship: Hapū Or Iwi Development


Number of recipients: 4

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to Māori postgraduate students undertaking study in a field that will support the strategic interests and direction of their Hapū or Iwi.  Applicants must submit a letter of support from the Chair (or equivalent).

Māori Education Trust Postgraduate Scholarship: STEM


Number of recipients: 4

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to Māori postgraduate students undertaking study in science (biology, chemistry, physics), technology, engineering or mathematics.  Applicants must meet all criteria and submit two references, one of which must be an academic reference.

Queen Elizabeth II Postgraduate Fellowship

Number of recipients: 1

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to a Māori or non-Māori graduate with excellent academic ability, who plans to research at postgraduate level, in a field that will be of benefit to Māori.

Rangiriri and Mātene Te Whiwhi Winiata Scholarship

Number of recipients: 4

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to Māori graduates to enable them to complete postgraduate studies. Pre-requisite is completion of a master’s degree.

Rose Hellaby Postgraduate Scholarship

Number of recipients: 2

Value of scholarship: Up to $30,000

These prestigious scholarships are available to Māori students with a record of proven academic excellence, undertaking Masters or PhD postgraduate study in the fields of engineering mathematics, science, technology or medicine. (Please contact the office for an application.)

Roy Watling Mitchell Prestigious Professions Scholarship

Number of recipients: 2

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to Māori graduates with a record of academic excellence.

Sir John Bennett Memorial Postgraduate Scholarship

Number of recipients: 2

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to Māori students who have completed a bachelor's degree and are enrolled full-time in either a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or Master's degree.

Sir John Bennett Memorial PhD Scholarship

Number of recipients: 1

Value of scholarship: $10,000

Available to a Māori student who have a Master's or Honour's degree and are enrolled in a PhD programme of study.

Sister Annie Henry Scholarship

Number of recipients: 2 in total(can be secondary or tertiary level)

Value of scholarship: $1,000

Available to Māori students who are a direct descendant of Reverend John George Laughton or of Tūhoe descent.

Tī Maru Māori Trust Prestigious Scholarship

Number of recipients: 2

Value of scholarship: $5,000

Available to Māori graduates with a record of academic excellence.
